It’s super weird to get a gift on someone else’s birthday. April 2nd was my father’s, and thankfully he was more into getting his favorite cake than he was getting material things. German chocolate cake trumps every other cake in his eyes. While celebrating and goofing around with the family, my grandfather had brought something down for me.
A few days ago, I sent him a text about how I was getting into photography again, and I wanted to do something with it this time. I’m sure the text alone made his day since he lives hours away, and it’s hard to see him often. He researched what cameras are available today and figured out how to help me take on the tradition of being our family photographer. He ended up bringing down a camera he owned. It’s a Canon Rebel XSi, and it still takes excellent photos even though it’s a few years old.
So this is my start in the world of photography! I played with it and got all kinds of tips and tricks from my papa. I captured as many memories as possible and explored different settings and modes. I think I’ll enjoy this adventure of mine a lot.
This camera will be a lot of help with doing this whole blog thing. I’ll be able to share my adventures better and maybe even showcase parts of my city or hometown when I get up there this Easter.
These next few weeks, I’ll get a lot of practice in composition and fiddling with the settings. Then I’ll have to figure out editing said photos so that they will be either more dramatic or more true to life than straight out the camera like these dandelions.
Thankfully, I have plenty of teachers to get me started, between my dad, my papa, and the internet. I have to resist the urge to buy everything I see and be selective. I’ve figured out very quickly how expensive this hobby can get. So I have to take it slow and focus on the actual photos than the equipment. I have an 18-55mm lens, and that’s it. Maybe soon, I will grab a 70-300mm to experiment more with nature and wildlife photography. I want this hobby to stick, I’ve tried getting into it a few years ago, but I got scared off by the price. This time, however, I won’t give up.
